The Long and Short of it
Overview
When we launched the core collection, shorts were a core product that we knew we needed to perfect. Often the first thing you purchase from a new sportswear brand, we had to consider what truly makes a great short.
Firstly, we needed to establish its purpose. As primarily a training wear brand, the Colt Short were specifically designed for the weight room. Although we’ve had great feedback from runners, our focus was how can we optimise a short for strength training and conditioning.
Fabric
Like all our products, fabric is the cornerstone of creating a great foundation. Our designer Emma vouched for the Far East when it comes to woven fabrics. Woven fabrics are made by weaving together two set of yarns, which in turn results in a durable and robust structure, perfect for longevity and shape retention. You can also achieve featherweight lightness without sacrificing durability, ideal for a training short.
After months of sourcing, we landed on a lightweight fabric from Labtex in Taiwan, a powerhouse when it comes to innovative technical fabrics. The fabric has light stretch and we added a moisture wicking treatment to ensure breathability through intense sessions.
Features
Our design philosophy is guided by the Japanese principle of Shibui, known to the region as unobtrusive beauty. We approach design with the viewpoint of trying to add value to the athlete, without any unnecessary add-ons.
For the Colt Short, we explored strength training and what would be useful to maximise the athlete’s performance and comfort. We added heat bonded seams to the hem. This minimises any chafing which can occur through exercise, especially when performing movements. We also added a soft interior knit waistband, optimising comfort on the waist. Finally, we added an interior zip pocket within the right main pocket. Designed to fit an iPhone, this interior pocket is made from a sweat resistant knit fabric and secures your iPhone perfectly through your workout.
Fit
The Colt Short is a regular fit with slight taper at the quads. It’s been designed to maximise comfort, eliminating excess fabric through the taper and heat sealing the hems. The inseam is 6 inches, sitting mid quad on most people.
Trims
Signature lilac detailing can be seen through our drawcords sourced from Shimada in Japan. Our distinctive T-stitch has been integrated into the side panel, also in lilac, made using a high-quality thread from Gütermann in Germany. We tested the thread over fifty washes, and saw no decrease in quality over time.
The Colt Training Short is the result of eighteen months of concept and development. Following rigorous testing and feedback sessions, we worked closely with our production partner in Portugal to bring the garment to life. The result, a short that becomes your go-to for training and activity.
